The basics
How is this different from Audible?
Audible sells you pre-recorded audiobooks from a catalogue. Aureader takes your own books, articles, PDFs, and documents and reads them aloud. Different problem, different tool. Some people use both.
What file types can I upload?
PDF, EPUB, DOCX, plain text (.txt), or paste a URL to any public article. Up to 50 MB per file.
How big can the files be?
50 MB max per upload — comfortably covers most full-length books, long PDFs, and textbooks. If you have something bigger, email us and we’ll figure it out.
Do I need to install anything?
On desktop: just open the site, no install. On Android: there’s a beta APK you can sideload. iOS lands after the closed beta.
Voices & languages
How natural do the voices sound?
Pretty natural. We use the best conversational AI voices available today — sample them on the voices page before you commit.
What languages are supported?
English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazilian + European), French, German, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Korean, Russian, Polish, Dutch. We auto-detect the language of your upload and pick a matching voice — you can override if you want.
Can I change voices mid-book?
Yes. Pick a different reader from the player and we’ll swap them in without losing your spot. The new voice picks up from where you paused.
What are “reader avatars”?
Three customisable readers per account — typically a male, a female, and a neutral. Set them up once with the voice + look you like, and Aureader auto-picks the right one for each book’s tone or language. You can still override per book.
Pricing & quota
Is there a free tier?
Yes — 10 minutes of audio per month, no card required. Enough to test the voices and see if Aureader fits how you read.
What counts toward my minutes?
Audio you actually listen to (and audio that’s pre-rendered for you to listen to). Uploads themselves don’t cost minutes — only the synthesis does.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes, no annual lock-in unless you choose the annual plan (which is just 2 months free vs monthly). Cancel from your account page, the plan stops at the end of your current period.
Do I get a refund?
Within 14 days of purchase, full refund — no questions, just email support@aureader.com. That’s required by EU consumer law and we’re fine with it.
Privacy & ownership
Who can see my uploads?
Only you. Files are stored privately per account on Cloudflare R2. They’re not shared, not indexed, not used to train any model. Delete an item and the original file plus all generated audio go too.
Is my listening history private?
Yes. We store position-syncing data (so you can pick up where you left off) but never share it. Read our privacy policy for the full breakdown.
Can I upload copyrighted material?
For your personal use — yes (same way you’d use a Kindle). You’re responsible for the rights to whatever you upload. Don’t share generated audio publicly without the rightsholder’s OK.
Technical
Does it work offline?
Not yet. The web player needs a connection to stream synthesised audio. Offline mode is on the roadmap for the mobile app.
How fast does the first audio start?
About 5–30 seconds for a fresh upload, depending on length and language. The trick: we start playing the first passage while the rest is still being processed in the background.
Where is my data stored?
Inside the EU. GDPR-aligned by default.
